Spieth's unfathomable collapse opens door for Danny Willett victory at Masters

Jordan Spieth set a Masters record for leading 7 straight rounds dating back from the beginning of his wire to wire finish in the 2015 tournament to entering Sunday’s final round in 2016, but it wasn’t enough to lock down his second green jacket.

Danny Willett came seemingly out of nowhere from changing dirty diapers of his newborn child last week to shooting a final round 67, taking his -5 under par for the tournament with him to the clubhouse to see how the rest of the field would finish.

Spieth entered the turn on a four-hole birdie streak before the wheels started to fall off. Back to back bogeys on the 10th and 11th started the downfall before a quadruple bogey on 12, after plunking two balls in the water, doomed the 22-year-old falling to -1 under for the tournament with 6 holes to play.

Spieth recovered somewhat from the train wreck trajectory he was headed on but finished the tournament -2 under par, three strokes behind Willett for the tournament.

Spieth finished on the wrong side of history, going from a chance to become the fourth player to ever win back to back masters and the youngest player to ever win three majors, to perhaps his Sunday round going down as the biggest collapse in Masters history. Still, Spieth is only 22-years old and has finished top-2 in his three career Masters appearances.

The story of this tournament will always be more about Spieth the runner up than Willett the winner, but Willett deserves enormous amounts of credit for a tournament well played and staying composed to shoot an incredible round on Sunday.
