Sources: Nuggets waive Josh Childress

The Denver Nuggets have waived Josh Childress, league sources told BSN Denver.

Childress, 34, signed a one-year, non-guaranteed contract with the Nuggets this summer and appeared in one preseason game where he went scoreless in four minutes of action against the Los Angeles Lakers.

The 6-foot-8 swingman played for the Ball Hogs in Ice Cube’s BIG3 league this summer and was the first player from the BIG3 to sign an NBA contract after the league’s inaugural season.

Childress was drafted No. 6 overall by the Atlanta Hawks in 2004 out of Stanford, played four seasons for the franchise and emerged as one of the league’s most promising young players, averaging 13.0 points and 6.2 rebounds per game in 2007. He then signed a three-year, $20 million deal with Olympiakos in Greece and returned to the NBA prior to the 2010-11 season with the Phoenix Suns.

Prior to his stint with Denver, Childress hadn’t played in the NBA since the 2013-14 season when he appeared in four games for the New Orleans Pelicans. Childress played last season with SAN-EN NeoPhoenix of the Japanese League and averaged 18.8 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.

Denver’s preseason came to a close Tuesday when the Nuggets fell to the Oklahoma City Thunder 96-86. Denver opens their regular season Oct. 19 in Utah against the Jazz.

The Nuggets’ roster sits at 17 players including two-way players Torrey Craig and Monte Morris.
