Paul Millsap, Wilson Chandler, Malik Beasley, Jamal Murray, Will Barton, Jameer Nelson, Trey Lyles, Darrell Arthur, and Kenneth Faried are among Nuggets players working out together in Atlanta this week, league sources told BSN Denver.
The workouts are being treated as a mini camp and were organized by Millsap, sources said. The 32-year-old, who signed a three-year $90 million contract with Denver this summer, played for the Hawks for the past four seasons and spends much of his offseason in Atlanta. Monte Morris and Torrey Craig, who both signed two-way contracts with Denver this offseason, are in attendance as well.
Point guard Emmanuel Mudiay is hosting his Skills Academy this week in Albany, New York.
With media day just over five weeks away, the Nuggets are getting a head start on a season with heightened expectations after their 2016-17 campaign fell just short of the playoffs. Denver returns all of their core rotation pieces except for Danilo Gallinari who signed with the Clippers this summer. With Millsap in tow, the Nuggets are expected to compete for a playoff spot in a highly competitive Western Conference.
The organized workouts run through Thursday, league sources say.
Millsap is set to pair with Nikola Jokic in Denver’s frontcourt to add even more versatility to the Nuggets’ top-5 offense from a year ago. Chandler, Murray, and shooting guard Gary Harris are expected to round out Denver’s starting five.
On Wednesday, Denver announced the hirings of assistant general manager Calvin Booth and assistant coach Bob Weiss as the Nuggets’ turn their attention towards the start of training camp.
Denver’s first preseason game is Sep. 30 in Oakland against their Warriors and their regular season opener is slated for Oct. 18 in Utah.
