Report: Mike Bobo interviewed for Missouri head coaching job

On Monday, Georgia head coach Mark Richt and the university decided to split ways; we brought you what it meant for former Bulldogs quarterback/offensive coordinator and current Colorado State Rams head coach Mike Bobo.

Today, news out of the coaching carousel is Missouri Athletic Director Mack Rhodes has been in Denver interviewing candidates for his school’s vacant head coaching position.

According to Pat Forde of Yahoo’s sources, Bobo was one of the men interviewed for the job. As were Air Force Academy’s Try Calhoun, Utah State’s Matt Wells and on Tuesday, California coach Sonny Dykes.

Dykes seems to be the frontrunner for the position considering he just finished a third season with Cal and his contract has ended. While there is an extension which has been offered by the school, Dykes has yet to agree.

Calhoun has coached for nine seasons with the Falcons, compiling a  67-48 record and will compete for the Mountain West Championship this Saturday against the San Diego State Aztecs. Calhoun’s showed smarts to adapt to the athletes at AFA, utilizing the option offense with great success over the years.

Wells, like Dykes, just competed his third season, but with the Utah State Aggies. Utah State has gone 25-15 under Wells along with bringing a truly dominant defense. Finally, current Missouri defensive coordinator Barry Odom is in the running for Mizzou’s head coaching job.

Bobo has the least experience of any of the men listed above. After just one year as a head coach, Bobo led his Rams to a 7-5 record as they await a bowl invitation. It was a stellar job of not only implementing his offense and culture but in rallying the troops when the team fell to 2-4 at the season’s halfway point.

If Bobo were to get hired away by Mizzou, Georgia or anyone else, they would have to fork out the entire $5 million buyout which was installed into Bobo’s contract by Colorado State.

While it seems unlikely the 41-year old head coach will leave after just one year with CSU, there’s no doubting the rumors of other schools being interested in him will continue to surface as long as he’s successful.

Interestingly, three of the candidates for the position in the prestigious South Eastern Conference come from the “small-time” Mountain West.
