Shane Ray and the Broncos catch a big break

After a year of bad news, Shane Ray finally caught a break.

According to Ian Rapoport, Ray did not undergo surgery on his left wrist this summer after the doctor who was slated to perform the surgery deemed it unnecessary.

Instead of missing nearly three months with an additional surgery, which likely would have caused him to miss multiple games of the season, Ray’s timeline to return after undergoing rehab is expected to be quicker than the three months that the surgery would have required. This means Ray may not miss a single game.

Ray’s wrist injuries date back to the start of 2017 training camp when he suffered extensive injuries in his left wrist, causing him to undergo surgery and miss the first six games of the regular season.

After additional swelling and discomfort this offseason, Ray was scheduled to undergo another surgery to continue to repair the wrist until the doctor delivered the good news that he didn’t believe it was necessary.

It is unclear whether or not the former first-round pick will need to wear a cast as he did last year once he returns to the field. Ray finished the 2017 season with seven starts in eight games, compiling one sack.

Before his injury last year, Ray was on a promising career path, racking up 12 career sacks on eight total starts in his first two years in the league. However, after his wrist injury derailed his season last year, the Broncos chose not to pick up his fifth-year option for the 2019 season.

The good news for Ray comes at just the right time with training camp beginning on Saturday.
