ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — There’s no doubt Russell Wilson’s going to have a tremendous impact on the field for the Denver Broncos come September.
It’s undeniable that the future Hall-of-Famer is going to provide the best quarterback play since Peyton Manning and carry the team to the playoffs year after year.
That payoff, however, will have to wait until Week 1.
But Denver’s star quarterback is already having a significant impact on the construction of the team, despite officially being a Bronco for only 24 hours.
“Russell Wilson was a big part of the reason I came here,” new Broncos defensive lineman D.J. Jones stated during his introductory press conference on Thursday. “I know what he’s capable of, and I’m excited that he’s my quarterback.”
Much like Manning helped John Elway lure free agents to town, Russ’ presence in Denver will help George Paton land top talent from around the NFL.
In fact, he’s already doing it.
Peter Schrager reported after Jones signed with Denver that the defensive lineman received more money from other teams than the Broncos’ three-year, $30 million offer, yet still chose to come to the Mile High City. On Thursday, Jones pushed back against that notion a bit, but did admit he had a wide range of teams pursuing him.
“It was a good bit of teams. Some interesting offers. But we won’t get into that. We had a lot of love from teams, but I feel like this was home from the jump, especially when they made the move on Russ,” Jones stated, brining up Wilson as a reason he chose Denver unprompted. “I knew it was somewhere I wanted to be. I wanted to win immediately. That’s what they’re doing here. That’s what we are doing here.”
Not only does Wilson bring top-end play at the most important position in sports, he brings “stability,” as Jones put it.
“Stability is everything, especially playing against a guy like Russ. Knowing his tendencies. Knowing that he’s going to give his all every game,” Jones stated. “So when I knew he was the quarterback, I didn’t flinch.”
The 27-year old wasn’t the only one to be swayed to Denver by the nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback either.
Tight end Eric Tomlinson, who the Broncos signed to a one-year deal, also had a “few” teams interested in signing him. But Russ in Orange & Blue “Definitely made it a lot easier” for Tomlinson to choose Denver.
“I mean, being able to play with someone like him, who just makes everyone around him better is awesome,” the 6-foot-6, 265-pound tight end said. “I’m really looking forward to it.”
Broncos’ new versatile offensive lineman Tom Compton, who played against Wilson the past two years when the two were both in the NFC West, added it’s “exciting” to have a quarterback as dynamic and mobile as Wilson.
“I’ve seen him first hand, him running around and making plays,” Compton said. “It’s awesome as an offensive lineman to know that you can trust him, that if anything were to happen, that he can make something happen.”
Paton and the Broncos’ executive staff have no doubt done a heckuva job in their first 15 months on the job, especially after landing the Pro Bowl quarterback. But Russ will unquestionably make their jobs easier when it comes to bringing top talent to the Mile High City.
In fact, Russ is already paying dividends six months before ever taking a snap as a member of the Broncos.
