Deron Thompson, a sophomore running back with Colorado State football and track, saw his career come to a close recently.

Thompson, who has two years of eligibility remaining, is transferring from CSU to Kansas he confirmed with BSN. He played in six games as a freshman, including an 11-carry, 68-yard game against Hawaii. But, last year, Thompson saw action in only one game, rushing six times for 47 yards with Mike Bobo as the team’s head coach.

In track, Thompson and his teammates finished fourth in the 4x100M relay, and he came in 19th at the New Mexico Team Invitational in the 60M dash.

For CSU football, Bobo has preached — and held to — competition at every position. That’s been no more evident than at the running back position, where the Rams regularly carry many players. Last season, Dalyn Dawkins won the starting job in the spring and held onto it in the fall, with Treyous Jarrells as No. 2, Jasen Oden No. 3 and Thompson somewhere around No. 4. Mid-way through the season, Jarrells left the team and, eventually, Oden won the starting job.

With Oden and Jarrells gone, Dawkins is still running hard and with quickness, and the team saw the emergence of Izzy Matthews, who could quickly become a fan favorite and could be the team’s starter this year. Plus, there’s Bryce Peters on the roster, and three more running backs are joining the team in the fall.

For Thompson, the decision seems straightforward.

With two seniors on the roster for Kansas, after sitting a year out, Thompson will be one of five backs on the Jayhawks’ roster, meaning more competition is ahead.
