Get off Peyton Manning’s back, Broncos Country.

As an aging 5-time NFL MVP, Manning is the focal point for criticism surrounding the Denver Broncos’ struggling offense. Of course, it’s easy when you’re a 39-year old quarterback, having the ball in your hands every play. Plus, he loves to change the play at the line; miscalculations show up as blatant mistakes and Manning’s to blame.

And with three interceptions thrown in yesterday’s 26-23 victory over the Cleveland Browns, Manning’s 10 picks are most in the NFL while his 72.5 passer rating is 33rd.

But new starting running back Ronnie Hillman says fans need to leave Mr. Manning alone.

Some fans took it harshly, apparently.

Hillman ran 20 times for 111 yards in yesterday’s game, which was the Broncos third-best rushing performance of the season. Now fans are trying to run him out of town. OK, maybe not, but many didn’t like his comments.

Look, criticism is just the nature of the game of football and especially at the quarterback position. Hillman knows that, as a player many labeled as a “bust” for years, but he’s silencing those critics, too.

But, being a critic doesn’t mean you’re a “fake fan” it may mean you’re a better one; more unbiased and realistic.

And, no matter who the QB is — from John Elway to Jake Plummer to Kyle Orton and even Peyton Manning — Broncos fans love to boo their quarterback when he’s not playing up to par. If Hillman and Manning don’t like the noise, they can shut fans up by scoring and improving on the offensive end.
