Patrick, this was a hard column to write (and read), but also very well done. Even the Dodgers (yes, even with Mookie signed to a 200 year 5 billion dollar contract) could face just the wrong injuries or illnesses and miss the playoffs. So, worst case scenario (which I think we saw in 2019 for the Rox).

If the Rox don’t get 58 games on the active roster from the big 8 (5 fielders/3 pitchers) at or near their historical WAR..they will be picking again in the Top 10. If they get just the average career WAR from those 8…things get interesting. It then falls to a healed Davis, a healed Oberg and a breakout from McMahon and/or Hilliard/Tapia.

It’s going to be a wild ride. No one really knows. We could be sitting here in November talking about MVP votes for Butera or act Young votes for Davis or Freeland. Or we could be talking about how the Rox through 60 were on a Cleveland Spiders level of futility. Somehow I can see both as legitimately possible. But I’m putting my £10 on a wild card run.

Thank for the fair assessment of this piece. It was a challenge to say the worst imaginable things about this club, especially since it still teems with potential.
While I don’t know how anyone would have predicted the events of 2019 following consecutive postseasons, I think this one is a little more clear to see.
With MLB announcing that the playoffs have expanded to 16 teams (or more than 50% of clubs), the real worst case scenario would be a 3rd place finish in the NL West, no playoffs and the 14th overall pick in 2021. If you can’t be great, then you might as well be great at being bad so that you can reap the benefits of the draft.
Thanks again for reaching out, Christopher. Keep the passion coming. Fingers crossed on your tenner.
