On this episode of the BSN Rockies Podcast, Drew Creasman breaks down what to watch for as spring training games finally kick off on Friday. What should Jeff Hoffman’s focus be? And who else might pitch? Plus, we set the stage for position battles and answer a few more questions including one about one of the most absurd ideas ever suggested in order to “fix” baseball.

I heard on Golic and Wingo (don’t judge, I was caught up on podcasts) talking about the 9th inning pick-a-batter idea and apparently the original idea came from Stu Gotts. I’ve never been so frustrated listening to a show that has so many listeners nationally. Absolute garbage.

Bsn Rockies we have baseball. Today is the first game of spring training baseball for the Colorado Rockies and I am excited, so excited in fact I have my portable radio ready to tune into the 1:00 pm game. I haven’t written in a while whether it be here or twitter but I have a story to get off my mind so bear with me.
Baseball is a special sport for me, a very special sport but for the ice cold beer or the mystical crack of the bat. It’s not the jaw-dropping play that Nolan made from third or the almost no-hitter thrown by Freeland. No it’s the time I spend with my dad. I haven’t always loved baseball the way I do now but my love started with my dad taking me and my sister to games. My first real memory of baseball is going to a game with my whole family and the Rockies were playing the Tigers. We were sitting in the purple row above first base, both teams were bad this year and we were sitting next to a couple who where tigers fans. My dad being from Detriot began to relive the glory years of the tigers, the 84 world series tigers being one. But his fondest memory was going to the final home playoffs game vs the twins and the eventual heartbreak of this team. A similar thing sucked me into baseball in the 2009 season of the Rockies I watched the final game against the Phillies in the comfort of our home. My dad being incredibly superstitious would not watch the Rockies pitch, I convinced him to finally just watch the game and street lost the game. I don’t regret seeing them lose because now I and my dad have a deeper connection. I go to few baseball games with my dad every year, this great tradition was born out of heartbreak. After we finished watching the game my dad let me try my first beer (a stale gross coors) we talked and talked for hours. This ritualistic bonding of father and son now continues with my first baseball season I can legally drink and boy am I excited.

You mentioned that one of Dahl or Tapia will start in RF, and the other in AAA. Let’s assume Tapia is the starting RF. What’s your roster look like?
Mine:
Starting 5: Gray, Anderson, Marquez, Freeland, Bettis
Bullpen: Davis, McGee, Shaw, Ottavino, Oberg, Dunn, Rusin, Estevez
Starting Position Players (in batting order): Tapia, Blackmon, Arenado, Story, Desmond, McMahon, LeMahieu, Ianetta
Bench: Parra, Valaika, Wolters
That’s 24 players. If Dahl is in AAA getting reps, who’s the 25th player? Patterson? Tauchman? TBD?

Maybe Senzatela is the 25th man and they carry 9 in the ‘pen?

I think Patterson Could end up going back a forth between triple a and the pros with injuries. I believe if he’s called up that he’ll be a bench player with valika taking over the starting role of either short third or second. The one way I see Patterson starting is to give either mcman or desmond a rest day if one or the other is hurt.
