Hey Drew,
I’ve really enjoyed the discussion recently on salaries and arbitration.
I have noticed that one of your main points is that many player’s most valuable years are often during their (pre)arbitration/lowest paid years. But then you have also discussed the slow offseason and how these veteran players are not getting paid what they are worth.
Isn’t it hard to have both? If players with 6 or less years of service time are getting paid closer to their value, wouldn’t the length and money of the veteran contracts shrink?
Furthermore, isn’t the 6 year process prior to free-agency beneficial to the health of the league given that it allows for smaller and mid-market teams the ability to compete? Since the MLB is not like the NFL And has guaranteed contracts, smaller market teams having to pay the Nolan’s/Votto’s/Hosmer’s/Longoria’s what they are worth in their first 6 years in the league would be severely limited in their ability to build a winning team.
