First the Commisioner is an employee of the owners, so he does nothing without the owners permisiion. You continue to act as though the players are equals to the owners. Thye are employees of the owners and therefore ultimately do what the owners will want or they will not get paid.

And not all teams books are secret, the Atlanta Braves are owned by a publicly traded company and thereofre all numbers must be made public. In 2019 the Braves had a 54 million dollar gross profit on 476 million in gross revenue. After Depreciation, interest, taxes etc they had a net loss.

But even just using the the 54 million the y had an avg ticket price of 29.44 and an avg attendance of 32,776 fans per game which generates 964,925 in gross ticket revenue per game or 78,128,960 for the year. This money is gone by not having fans. Sure they will save 2 million by not having the 300 employees at games, but before Concessions, Parking, and any other money they are in the red by 24 million.

The easiest way for teams to make up those losses? Player payroll.

Manfred is a labor lawyer first and foremost and was put into his position as commisioner to do the job he set up to do right now. YOu may not like automated strike zones and a universal DH (Although the MLBPA has wanted this for decades) But be careful what you wish for as the owners are not going to replace him with someone you will like any better. Fay Vincent was fired because he acquiesced to players.

Oh and since this is a Rockies site they lose 81,684,237 dollars in ticket revenue with no fans. Hello 100 million dollar payroll

Hey, Racerman. Great stuff in this comment from a couple weeks back. My apologies for not recognizing it sooner.

Good call on Atlanta. However, they are the lone exception to the rule as they are the only club owned by a publicly traded company (Liberty Media).

I recall looking at the numbers of their reported loss in 2019 and, while it was mentioned briefly in an article, there is a rather large piece of the puzzle that’s missing when you consider whether or not owning a baseball team is lucrative or not: Atlanta was given a brand new ballpark – after receiving one for free thanks to the Olympics in 1996 – that will help immensely for further increasing the value of their franchise.

(Atlanta has also been a bit unscrupulous in ensuring all of their minor league affiliates – which they own – receive brand new stadiums from communities that simply do not get the return on investment. So, their owner are the most egregious when it comes to being greedy.)

You’re take on Manfred is correct: he’s a puppet of owners and the next commish will be, too.

Part of the issue with how this was handled deals with the upcoming CBA in December of 2021. I don’t think the players are looking for any major changes even after “losing” the last negotiations. Owners, on the other hand, would love to go back to the days of the reserve clause and paying players peanuts. Because of this, it’s quite hard to site with the owners and their puppet.

Both players and owners will take a big hit during 2020 – all sports will probably make that claim by the end of the year. However, it’s my opinion that the owners want to take much less than their fair share in addition to making sure it doesn’t happen again in the next century. But without players – the best players – they don’t have a game. And, yes, without coming to an agreement with owners, players won’t have a job. Catch-22, coincidentally.

Thanks again for the detailed comments. I don’t always get a chance to reply to ones on other articles, but I can definitely do so on ones that I publish. Keep ’em coming, buddy. 🙂
