DENVER – There is a lot for Colorado Rockies fans to love about what they see when they watch German Marquez pitch.
But as awe-inspiring as his stuff can be, his demeanor may be what ultimately sets him apart.
For someone who is still just 23 years of age, he has showcased an incredible level of maturity since making his MLB debut and his calm, cool, and collected disposition have become his trademark on the field and in the clubhouse.
And that was no different when speaking to a larger gathering of press than he ever had before Sunday’s Game 3 of the NLDS, the first postseason ballgame played in Denver since 2009.
“The process, my preparation doesn’t change,” he said. “I’ve been doing this, especially after the All-Star break. I’ve put a lot of my confidence in my preparation, and that’s not changing. So I know it’s a big game, but the process doesn’t change.”
Marquez has become known for going toe-to-toe with some tough lineups already in his career and now he faces a Milwaukee Brewers team that is as capable of doing damage as any in the National League.
“We all know they have a potent lineup, but I’m going to execute my plan, which is executing my pitches, hitting my target, and give our team a chance to win games, stay close in games,” he said. They do have a good lineup. That’s no secret, but we have a good lineup, as well.”
Specifically, this Brewers team boasts the man who should be the NL MVP. But, to the surprise of absolutely no one who has followed the Venezuelan to this point, that doesn’t scare Marquez one bit.
“I’ve got to give him credit,” he said. “He’s a great hitter. Everyone knows that. But again, I’ve got control. I’ve got the ball in my hand, and if I execute my pitches, I like my chances of getting him out.”
With the lights on him blazing brighter than it ever has, and a substantial challenge standing right in front of him, the ever-focused Marquez says that he finds his calm in a confidence about his team and what they’ve done to get to this point.
“I believe in my team. This is a great team. We’ve fought together to get to this point, and there’s no really additional pressure. We prepare. We get ready to fight, and we’re still grateful for being here. And I’m going to do my best, and I’m sure my teammates are going to do their best to hopefully win this game.”
German Marquez will throw the first pitch of Game 3 of the NLDS at 2:37 Mountain Time.
