Reyes’ wife is refusing to cooperate with the investigation which made it incredibly unlikely that he would have been convicted in trial.

This news does not necessarily mean that Reyes will immediately join the Rockies, however. The Aroldis Chapman incident earlier in the year has already set the precedent for MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred to issue his own penalty which is expected to be handed down in the next few days. It seems likely that today’s news will lessen the punishment that Reyes would have otherwise received, but it’s also entirely possible that it doesn’t factor into Manfred’s decision at all.

It’s difficult to tell what, if any, today’s revelations will have on the team, specifically Trevor Story, who was just officially announced as the starter at the shortstop position. If the Rockies’ plan was to buy Reyes out after serving whatever suspension he receives, this could still be the case and may just mean that proposition becomes slightly more expensive. Today’s news is not a confirmation that Reyes will see the field in a Rockies uniform in 2016.

The next step is to see how seriously MLB takes these accusations without the backing of a court ruling. Reyes could still receive a lengthy suspension but if the league comes down much softer after today’s news, the Rockies may find themselves in a rush to either get rid of — or heaven forbid actually play — Reyes to their own detriment.
