Assuming what we saw from Estevez, Kinley and Gilrbrath can be repeated, the addition of a Kimbrel could turn the pen into an asset not a liability (the need two strong long men too, so a rerun from Chacin and a step from another would be needed). But that is a good chunk of money for at most 75 innings. But 75 of the most key innings.

Do they allocate SS, RF and then closer? Or reverse believing that money spent on a quality closer is the easier to flip either at trade deadline or next offseason (figuring min 2-year deal).

I think the Rockies have more spots to fill than money to spend, unfortunately. They’ll need to get creative – as always – so the moves to find a shortstop, power-hitting outfielder and bullpen depth may make it difficult to get Kimbrel and his $16 million contract. Oh and we haven’t even mentioned a 5th starter in the rotation or bringing back Jon Gray.

Oddly enough, they could probably save the most money at SS and just wait for someone like Freddy Galvis or José Iglesias to run out of options elsewhere. A defense-first shortstop could plug the hole for the time being and allow for bigger money to spent on a slugger and sufficient bullpen support.

Thanks for reaching out, Christopher.
