Rockies stifled by Brewers in lackluster loss

The Colorado Rockies returned to Milwaukee for the first matchup with the Brewers since being swept out of the 2018 NLDS by them.

The good news came in the form of Kyle Freeland taking the mound at all but the game was over almost as soon as he did.

It was a rude return for the lefty making his first start since going on the IL with a finger blister, giving up four runs in the first, including a huge three-run jack to Jesus Aguilar.

Aguilar got Freeland again in the third, giving the Brewers a 5-0 lead that was more than enough considering the lack of momentum for the Colorado offense.

The Rockies did end up getting a run in the sixth, but even that required a fielding error from Orlando Arcia around a walk from Daniel Murphy and the RBI single off the bat of David Dahl.

Pretty much the only fire showed all game by the Rockies came when Ian Desmond was ejected in the fifth for arguing the strike zone, which was inconsistent all game, of home plate umpire Jeff Nelson.

Also of note, during the altercation, second base umpire Laz Diaz felt it was necessary to physically restrain Desmond despite him looking mostly under control. It will be interesting to see what, if anything, more comes from this situation.

There were also some impressive diving catches for Colorado in the game from Trevor Story, Ryan McMahon, and Desmond.

All told, it was a dud of a game and one in which the Rockies have to do a bit of cap tipping to starting pitcher Zach Davies.

Three games remain to see if something will spark with the purplers against the club that ended their most promising season in recent memory.

What’s Next

The second game of the series sees German Marquez take on former-Rockie Jhoulys Chacin. First pitch at 5:40 Mountain Time on Tuesday.
