Rockies offense stays stuck in the mud, Padres pull away late

The Colorado Rockies offensive woes reached critical mass on Friday in San Diego. A second straight game that was marked not by being dominated by fantastic pitching but rather by beating themselves with poor execution on numerous occasions, amounted to a 7-0 loss.

What began as a close game thanks to another brilliant effort from a Rockies starter, this time Antonio Senzatela, became a laugher when the Padres poured on six runs in the final two frames.

The Rockies offense, meanwhile, recorded just five hits and went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

The scoreless stalemate was broken in the fourth when Franmil Reyes, who walked off on the Rockies in the first game of the series, got ahold of one of the few mistakes Senzatela made in the game. A fastball floated back over the heart of the plate and he didn’t miss it, smashing one over the wall in left for another solo home run, putting the Padres up 1-0.

The Rockies had some chances to answer back in both the fifth and the sixth.

Chris Iannetta led off the fifth with a single and was able to move up on a sac bunt from Senzatela but Charlie Blackmon lined out to left and DJ LeMahieu rolled over one to second, stranding him there.

Colorado got a pair of baserunners in the next frame on a walk from Carlos Gonzalez who surprisingly moved up when Nolan Arenado laid down a bunt. Trevor Story hit a line drive to shortstop that Freddy Galvis was able to haul in but David Dahl drew another walk to give Ryan McMahon a chance for a big swing but RyMac struck out swinging to leave the pair aboard.

San Diego picked up an insurance run in the seventh against reliever Seunghwan Oh. Austin Hedges connected for a one-out double down the left-field line and he came around to score when Galvis shot a single through the right side; the type of hit that had eluded the Rockies all evening.

Things got away from the visitors in the eighth with Jake McGee on the hill. The lefty walked Travis Jankowski then surrendered a home run to Luis Urias followed by another to Wil Myers and a double for Eric Hosmer. He wasn’t fooling anybody with anything.

That prompted Bud Black to go to Bryan Shaw but the Padres kept it going, getting a double from Hunter Renfroe to score Hosmer and a single from Hedges to score Renfroe. And just like that, San Diego took an astounding 7-0 lead.

The Rockies will try to work back toward a series split on Saturday, sending Jon Gray to the hill. The Wolf of Blake Street will face off against lefty Robbie Erlin. First pitch at a far more reasonable 6:40 Mountain Time.
