Rockies implode again, lose 11-4 to Arizona

The Colorado Rockies were thoroughly outclassed by a bad baseball team yet again, losing 11-4 to the Arizona Diamondbacks. They didn’t wait to blow it at the end, instead pretty much giving the game away from the outset.

The Rockies, in an homage to last night’s game where they scored three runs in three straight innings, plated another trio in the opening frame tonight. Charlie Blackmon led off with a walk and he came all the way around on a DJ LeMahieu double off the very top of the center-field wall. LeMahieu scored on an incredibly odd bloop triple off the bat of Nolan Arenado.

The ball landed just inside the right-field line in a similar fashion to what we are used to seeing at Coors Field, but then it skipped past Yasmany Tomas allowing Arenado to get all the way to third. A groundout from Carlos Gonzalez brought him in and the Rockies were up three right out of the gate.

Also in an homage to last night, the Rockies gave the lead right back. Jean Segura began the bottom of the first against Jorge De La Rosa with a solo home run, his 13th big fly of the season. Chris Owings followed with a double and Paul Goldschmidt walked.

Then, on separate pitches, Owings stole third and Goldschmidt stole second. De La Rosa almost kept the lead, allowing one run to come in on a groundout and then snaring a line drive right back at him, but a two-out double from Jake Lamb inevitably tied the game at three.

It didn’t end there, though. Mitch Haniger drove in Lamb with a single to left before De La could finally retire his counterpart to end the madness. Four hits, two walks and four runs on 37 pitches in the first inning that lasted nearly 40 minutes.

Segura homered again in the fourth to extend the lead to 5-3 and after a double from Goldschmidt, De La Rosa’s night was done. He gave way to Eddie Butler who allowed a single to Tomas scoring Goldschmidt who had moved up on yet another passed ball from Nick Hundley.

That closed the book on Jorge De La Rosa: 3.1 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 3 K.

Blackmon got a run back for the Rockies in the top of the fifth on his 26th home run of the season.

But Butler gave up a big ugly five spot in the bottom of the frame, punctuated by a Brandon Drury home run and a double from Tomas to put the game out of reach. Of course, the Rockies never scored again so it’s questionable whether or not this one was ever in reach despite the Rockies scoring first and three times.

What’s Next

The Rockies will try to avoid the sweep in the final game of the series tomorrow as Jeff Hoffman takes on Ruby De La Rosa in another 7:40 MST start-time game. The Rockies return home on Friday to begin a three-game set with the San Diego Padres.
