Flesch-Law-Recap-
San Diego- Chris Rusin faced off against an unusually hot San Diego squad that scored 34 runs over a four game series up in Seattle against the Mariners.

In the bottom of the 1st, Matt Kemp obliterated a three-run bomb that easily reached the second deck. It appeared that Rusin maybe in for a very rough outing after surrendering three runs without recording an out, but he managed to settle down and went scoreless for the next two innings.

In the bottom of the fourth, Melvin Upton Jr. stole home, giving the Padres a four run lead.

Although Rusin allowed four runs (one unearned), he managed keep his pitch count low and was able to stay in the game. He pitched seven innings, giving up four hits, walking two and striking out three. Rusin avoided letting this outing get out of control and if the Rockies offense could have provided some runs of their own, this game may have been much closer.

Drew Pomeranz held the Rockies in check, pitching with ease the entire night. The former Rockie tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing two hits while striking out eight and walking two.

Lasting Impact

The Rockies lost their third straight game and their 6th in the last seven games. It has been a rough stretch for the Rockies, losing to teams in last place of each of their respective divisions. With a three game series in Los Angeles against the Dodgers looming, the Rockies will need to turn things around against the Padres if they want to keep pace in the NL West division race.

What’s Next

The Rockies will look to bounce back from the shutout Friday night with Chad Bettis taking the hill against Andrew Cashner. Game 2 of this three game series starts at 8:10 MST on Saturday night.
