Flesch-Law-Recap-PittsburghTyler Chatwood faced off against a potent Pirates offense in a game that began an hour delayed due to inclimate weather. He held them in check, surrendering several hits but managing to get out of trouble, only allowing one run through six innings.

With clouds looming the entire night, Tyler Chatwood pitched his fifth straight quality start, lasting at least 6 innings in all five. He was relatively under control Saturday, walking two and striking out two on 94 pitches, 59 going for strikes.

Jon Niese allowed one run in the first inning and cruised through the next six, striking out four in the process.

Trevor Story collected two hits and scored the teams’ first run on a double from Mark Reynolds.

Carlos Estevez pitched an inning and a third, striking out two and walking one. He looked confident in his pitches and kept the Rockies in the game and was credited with his first major league win.

Cristhian Adames entered the game in the bottom of the 7th inning as part of a double switch and went 1-2 with a home run and two RBI.

Jake McGee pitched out the 9th inning, giving up two hits but was able to hold off the Pirates.

Turning Point

In the top of the 9th inning, the Pirates made several errors that gave way to the Rockies breaking the tie. Then Cristhian Adames crushed a two run round tripper to deep center, giving the Rockies a 5-1 lead.

Lasting Impact

The Rockies ended their 9 game losing skid against the Pirates with opportune baserunning on two errors, clutch hitting and another solid performance from Tyler Chatwood.

There were also several close replay reviews that went in the Rockies favor for a change including Tony Wolters tagging out Jung Ho Kang on a sliding play at home.

What’s Next

The final game in this three game series at 11:35 MST on Sunday. After the victory Saturday, the Rockies will be looking to edge out the Pirates for a series win. Chad Bettis takes the mound against Juan Nicasio.
