Rockies blow another winnable game to the Padres

DENVER – The Colorado Rockies should absolutely not have lost their series finale against the San Diego Padres on Sunday afternoon but for the second time in the set, they blew a comfortable late lead to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

They lost 14-13 despite carrying a three-run lead into the bottom of the ninth and have no one to blame but themselves.

The Padres took a brief 3-0 lead in the top of the first against Peter Lambert in his third start at the MLB level. But Colorado came back for a huge sixth spot in the bottom of the frame, getting Charlie Blackmon’s 16th home run of the season and a series of quality singles from the rest of the lineup.

The Padres answered with another couple of runs against the youngster but the Rockies answered with three more, giving themselves a 9-5 lead after the second inning.

But San Diego kept clawing back with three more in the third, knocking Lambert from the game but still managing to leave the Rockies with a lead.

The home team answered with four more runs in the next two innings thanks to a lineup that continues to throw out hit after hit but the bullpen collapsed late again.

Bryan Shaw gave up two runs in the seventh and Wade Davis blew the game away by surrendering four runs in the ninth to give the game to the Padres.

It was Davis’ second blown save and second time in the series in which one could reasonably saddle the loss upon his shoulders.

Despite scoring 13 runs on 19 hits, the Rockies lost the series finale and had to settle for the split.

After Colorado’s brutal loss on Friday in another game in which they held a substantial lead going into the ninth, the Rockies will undoubtedly be a bit shook by this loss and looking for answers moving forward.
