Rockies affiliate sweeps Player of the Week awards for May

DENVER – The Colorado Rockies High-A affiliate, the High-A Lancaster JetHawks, have earned their fourth consecutive Player of the Week award, making it a clean sweep for the month of May. Rockies top prospect, shortstop Brendan Rodgers, won the award for the final week of the month by hitting .500 (15-for-30) with three doubles, four home runs, and 10 RBI. He also won for the week of May 8-14.

Rodgers is hitting .390 on the season with a 1.090 OPS and is likely in line for a promotion to Double-A at some point this season.

His second win of the month comes on the heels of teammate and fellow Rogers (though without the “d”) who won PotW the third week of May, Wes Rogers, the fastest man in Colorado’s system. The only question with Wes has been whether he could find his way on base often enough to make his speed a consistent weapon and he has done that so far this season. He was on pace to break a stolen base record in 2015 before getting hurt, but he has shown that he possess more than just raw speed but excellent baserunning instincts. Because of the way September roster expansion works, the other Rogers could even potentially get a call-up to the MLB level to help the Rockies cause havoc on the bases down the stretch.

Outfielder Sam Hilliard won the award for the first week of the month. The power hitter is putting up fantastic contact numbers with a .322 batting average to go along with his eight home runs and 38 RBI.

Rodgers became the second player to win multiple Player of the Week awards for the JetHawks since A.J. Reed won it four times in 2015.

Rodgers, Rogers, and Hilliard represent a scary reality for the rest of the National League West, and that is that the Colorado Rockies still have plenty of exciting young talent making their way through the system. They aren’t even close to done adding impact players, and while these guys may still be a few years away, the waves of promise keep crashing onto the shores of the Rocky Mountains.
