One day, Denver Broncos superstar and Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller will be a very rich man—even richer than he already is—today is not that day.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Miller rejected an offer early this afternoon that would have paid the outside linebacker $114.5 million over a six-year period, including $39.8 million guaranteed in the first two years, making him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL. This proposal comes just days after Miller himself told reporters that the two sides had made “real progress” in recent days.
One AFC West foe has been through all this before and it worked out in his favor, Miller could be using that as leverage. Justin Houston of the Kansas City Chiefs signed a six-year $101 million contract with $52.5 million guaranteed. In today’s NFL, guaranteed money is everything and that seems to be the main factor in these negotiations.
“I’d love to see him here before we call it a summer,” head coach Gary Kubiak Told Denver reporters on Tuesday. According to these reports, it’s looking bleak.
Miller, who has been noticeably absent during offseason workouts, was with his team when they traveled to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. on Monday to be honored for their Super Bowl 50 win. Both he and the Broncos have until the July 15th deadline to secure a contract before the franchise tag comes into effect and Miller would have to play for one-year at just over 14-Million dollars.
On a positive note, as Denver’s “exclusive rights” franchise player, Miller is not allowed to negotiate and cannot receive any offers from any team that is not located here in the Mile High City. The two sides will continue to work towards a deal.
