Many dominoes are set to fall for the Denver Broncos impending free agency and a few are already falling into place. After scheduling a visit with Earl Mitchell Wednesday, the Broncos are making moves on the other side of the line as well. Per Jay Glazer, the team has informed starting left tackle Russell Okung that they will not be picking up his four-year option.
Okung came from the Seattle Seahawks in free agency this past offseason, signing essentially a one-year contract with the team having a four-year option for $48 million and $20 million guaranteed. Without an agent and representing himself Okung gambled on his on-field ability taking a team-friendly first-year contract and hoping to prove he was worth the extension.
The Broncos could still attempt to keep Okung at figures that are closer to the $5 million he made this season than the $11 million plus he would have made otherwise. Though by all purposes Okung is a free agent who can explore the open market right now and competition from other teams could significantly complicate an extended stay for him in the Mile High City.
