Terrible. Atrocious. Awful.
Whatever word you want to use that is a synonym of “bad” fits, as Colorado State was worked 84-66 by the rival Wyoming Cowboys inside Moby Arena Saturday afternoon.
The Rams offense was the worst we’ve seen all year in the first half. Colorado State Rams men’s basketball started the game 0-10 and trailed 14-0 before they could finally find the basket. Meanwhile for the rival Wyoming Cowboys, Josh Adams was on fire. 12 minutes into the game, Adams led all scorers with 14 points while his Cowboys led the Rams 31-11. Finally, CSU’s offense woke up a bit and after a made 3-pointer by Joe DeCiman, the home team trailed by only 11. At half, though, Wyoming widened that lead back up to 14, 41-27. Colorado State shot a ghastly 29 percent from the floor while the Pokes made 52 percent of their attempts.
The second half started just like the first half ended as the Cowboys built their lead back up to 18. Then, finally, the Rams awoke. They scored nine straight points, capped by Omogbo’s second 3-pointer of the afternoon to cut the Cowboys to nine with 13:40 left in regulation. But, Wyoming kept coming and Adams kept scoring. Their lead was 13 with eight minutes to play. Then, it all fell apart for CSU as Josh Adams just simply went off. He was unstoppable and once he was on fire, just kept firing away from beyond the arc. The Rams lost 84-66.
STAR OF THE GAME
Emmanuel Omogbo for Colorado State, with a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds.
But the true star of the game was Josh Adams for Wyoming. He scored 37 points with eight rebounds and six assists. He made 12-20 shots (60 percent) and 9-16 (56.3 percent) from 3-point land.
PLAY OF THE GAME
Omogbo’s 3-pointer to cap the 9-0 run was the play of the game, but that run was far too short for the Rams to come back and win.
TURNING POINT
Emmanuel Omogbo’s 3-pointer mid-way through the second half was huge for Colorado State. It cut the Wyoming lead to nine, the first time it had been in single digits since very early on as it came at the end of a 9-0 run.
BY THE NUMBERS
Colorado State won the rebounding battle easily, 45-31, but it didn’t matter.
The Rams shot a hideous 32 percent (20-63) from the floor in the game, and an even worse 26 percent (8-31) from downtown.
The Rams led for all of 35 seconds.
LASTING IMPACT
In the rivalry, Wyoming has now won five straight games after the Rams ran off four straight before.
This is CSU’s third straight loss as they fall to 14-13 overall and 6-8 in the Mountain West.
