We at BSN Denver are running a series where we rank how valuable each of the Rockies’ 51 players was to the team in 2015. Value was calculated by statistics, viewing, and how memorable each player’s contributions were. The rankings will be from last to first, you may view the full rankings (here).
Player: Simon Castro
Stats: 11 G, 1o.1 IP, 2-0, 6.10 ERA, 1.548 WHIP, FIP 3.13, ERA+ 79, BF 47, H 11, BB 5, K 9, WAR 0.1
Big Moment: August 31st, the Rockies are in Denver playing the Diamondbacks down four to one entering the bottom of the ninth. A four run, four hit, two error bottom of the ninth highlighted by a Nolan Arenado two run single, and capped off with a walk off single from Ben Paulsen gave Castro his second career win. Castro pitched a scoreless eight and ninth, not allowing a baserunner, while making quick work of Arizona.
Season Recap: Castro spent most of the year in AAA Albuquerque, throwing 57 innings with a 3.79 ERA and a 1.281 WHIP. He had a 5-5 record, and his performance was a bright spot in the Isotopes bullpen, which was not a good pen. In his short time with the Rockies this year we did not see enough from Castro to judge him either way. He didn’t play competitive baseball in 2014 due to an injury, and this was his first year the Rockies had Castro in their organization. (He came over as free agent from the White Sox in early 2014)
What’s Ahead: The Rockies can do whatever they want with the 27 year old, it shouldn’t have too big of an affect on the club moving forward. The choice is between opening up his 40 man slot by outrighting him, or brining him back on pre-arbitration, neither will set Colorado back any noticeable amount cash or asset wise.
