2. Boone Logan

We at BSN Denver are running a series where we rank how valuable each of the Rockies’ 51 players was to the team in 2015. Value was calculated by statistics, viewing, and how memorable each player’s contributions were. The rankings will be from last to first, you may view the full rankings (here).

Player: Boone Logan

Stats: 60 G, 35.1 IP, 0-3, 4.33 ERA, 1.613 WHIP, 3.62 FIP, 108 ERA+, 11.2 K/9, 4.3 BB/9, 35 IR, 15 IS, 23 Holds, 0.3 WAR

Big Moment: June 2, the Dodgers are in Denver facing the Rockies, with a 5-3 lead Walt Weiss turns the ball over to Logan for the 7th after Jorge De La Rosa put himself in line for the win. Logan throws a 1-2-3 7th striking out two. Weiss goes right back to Logan for the 8th, where he got the first two batters out then Weiss brought on Rafael Betancourt to finish the 8th. Logan threw 20 pitches, bridging the gap from JDLR to John Axford who finished the game with a save.

Season Recap: The 31-year old left-hander’s second season with the Rockies was much better than his first one. Coming to the Rockies after signing a three-year deal worth upwards of 15 million dollars, Logan was misused badly in 2014. In 2015 Logan returned to a role where he faced more lefties than righties. LHB OPS’ed .602 against him while RHB OPS’ed .909 in 2015. The Rockies were more adept at putting him in a position to succeed, still Logan had trouble with inherited runners, allowing more than 40% of them to score and he was not very proficient in pitching a full inning. This dubs Logan as one of the most expensive left-handed specialists in baseball, certainly the Rockies have tried to make him do more than that, but he has not shown the ability to be a regular setup man.

What’s Ahead: Logan is in the last year of his contract with the Rockies. If he has a successful first half, it would not be surprising to see the Rockies trade him at the deadline.
