Colorado State added another weapon to its offensive arsenal with the commitment of Jaxxon Warren on Friday.
The 6-foot-7, 245-pound tight end posted on Twitter (X) that he is 100 percent committed to the Green & Gold. He chose the Rams over offers from Oregon State, SMU and South Florida, among others.
A converted quarterback out of Marcus High School in Flower Mound, TX, Warren threw for 2,400 yards with 24 touchdowns and only two interceptions his senior year. He actually participated in a QB camp under Jay Norvell and Matt Mumme at the University of Nevada in 2021. So his connections to this staff to back multiple years.
Warren began his collegiate career at Navarro College where he caught 17 passes for 308 yards and a pair of touchdowns in nine games this past season. He will come to CSU with at least two years of eligibility remaining.
Watching his Hudl highlights it’s clear that Warren is still raw as a route runner but what really stands out is his athleticism.
He gets up the field in a hurry with his long strides and looks like a natural pass catcher out there; which is to say that he uses his hands and not his body to bring the ball in. He has a wide catch radius and can adjust in tight spots along the sideline to make a play. And while I’m not sure you are going to draw up a ton of bubble screens for him, for a guy with that kind of size, he does display some nimbleness and elusivity out in the open field.
With the departure of Dallin Holker this offseason, Warren should have a good chance to see the field quite a bit this fall, potentially even start depending on how quickly he adjusts to the system when he gets to Fort Collins this summer. Vincent Brown, Jordan Williams and Mason Muaau will be in the mix as well.
As we saw firsthand this past season, the ability to attack the middle of the field was a crucial component in CSU’s passing offense being more explosive than it was in year number one, and Holker was a really big part of that.
It would probably be unrealistic to expect another finalist for the Mackey Award, however, it’s fair to say that there is a major role for one of these tight ends to claim. Adding another versatile athlete like Warren to the group can only help CSU’s cause.
