The Colorado Rockies have reinstated Greg Holland from the paternity list and recalled outfielder Raimel Tapia from Triple-A, optioning reliever Carlos Estevez back to Albuquerque and designating Jordan Lyles for assignment.
The writing has been on the wall for Lyles since the Rockies acquired Pat Neshek from the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday day, though the decision to DFA him was not necessarily an automatic one. The club could have opted for a number of other scenarios including optioning a young starter but Lyles 6.94 ERA finally caught up to him.
Tapia will step in while Ian Desmond is on the Disabled List and unless there is another injury or Colorado decides to part ways with Carlos Gonzalez somehow will likely be sent back down once Desmond is healthy.
Lyles could pass through waivers and still end up back in the Rockies system. He has pitched 46.2 innings this season for Colorado.
