One week after taking an official visit to campus, Darius Curry, a quarterback out of Long Beach, Calif., announced his commitment to Colorado State on Sunday night.
A three-star prospect according to 247Sports, Curry has received interest from some of the biggest programs in the country. Of the teams that have reportedly offered him over the years, LSU, Georgia, Michigan and Michigan State are the headliners. ASU, Cal, CU, KU and Washington State all offered him too though. As did Fresno State and San Diego State in the Mountain West.
Looking at the recruiting interest he’s received on a national level, signing a player like Curry would be a nice get for the CSU staff — especially when you factor in that he plays for Long Beach Poly — the same high school that produced DeSean Jackson, JuJu Smith-Schuster and many other college stars that eventually went on to the NFL. This is not a diamond in the rough situation. Long Beach Poly has about as much name recognition as any high school football program in the country. The CSU coaches deserve a lot of praise for the work they’ve done establishing relationships with some of these powerhouse schools on the West Coast.
Watching Curry’s highlights on Hudl, the first thing that jumps out is his deep ball. Not only does he have the arm strength to attack teams vertically, he also has the touch to hit his receivers in stride. Some of the throws that he is able to make deep down the sideline are truly impressive for a prospect going into his senior year of high school.
The other aspect of Curry’s game that really shines on film is his elusivity. If you give him too much open space, he certainly has the ability to take off and create a big play with his legs. But what’s encouraging, though, is that running does not appear to be his first instinct. Curry will oftentimes escape the pocket with the intent of creating more time to throw. And although it’s a fairly small sample size, his touch on those throws is pretty solid.
According to Max Preps, in 11 games this past fall, Curry completed 200 of 293 pass attempts and threw for 3,007 yards. He had 38 touchdowns and just four interceptions. Curry also rushed for five touchdowns and 125 yards.
