In this original BSN Denver series, we take a look at some of the best Rockies’ photography of the last week as well as the top shot in the game of baseball.
Jeff Hoffman is helped from the field after taking a 99.6 mph line drive from Alex Dickerson off his right knee in Tuesday’s 8-5 victory over San Francisco. Hoffman would make his next scheduled start in the final game of the season to bring his ERA to a very respectable 4.85 during the month of September where the 26-year-old made six starts for Colorado, the most of any starting pitcher.
Charlie Blackmon celebrates his three-run, 16th inning home run against the Giants with teammates Nolan Arenado and Garrett Hampson. Chuck Nazty would end the season with some of his best numbers of his career, including second best in homers (32), RBI (86), slugging percentage (.578), OPS (.943) and most doubles in a single season (42).
Reliever DJ Johnson and Nolan Arenado watch the first career home run for rookie Jaylin Davis exit Oracle Park in San Francisco. Starting his career 1-for-26, the outfielder broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the ninth to give the Giants victory number 2,002 for manager Bruce Bochy.
Mike Yastrzemski continues to punish the Rockies in his extraordinary, out-of-nowhere rookie season. His 21st home run of the season against fellow rookie Jesus Tinoco. What makes his total of dingers in 2019 even more impressive: they all are after his debut on May 25.
Raimel Tapia deposits his fourth pinch hit home run of the season, a grand slam in the sixth inning, into right field during a monster seven-run inning against Milwaukee. Not only was it El Cangrejo’s second career pinch hit grand slam, the feat makes him the first player in franchise history to hit two pinch-hit grand slams. For the season, he has four such pinch hit homers, tying the 25-year-old for the second-most in franchise history and most since Pat Valaika in 2017.
In an old school bang-bang play at the plate, Tony Wolters secures the ball to tag out Lorenzo Cain in the ninth inning during a crucial moment of Saturday’s ballgame. Because of the run prevention, Sam Hilliard added a game-tying pinch hit home run before Trevor Story walked it off in the 10th.
Trevor Story caps an audacious comeback by the Rockies on Saturday night with his home run to the opposite field in the 10th inning over the Milwaukee Brewers, preventing the 2018 NLDS foes from moving into a tie for first place in the NL Central. The come-from-behind win marked the first time in franchise history that homers were slugged in the eight, ninth and tenth innings. It also gave Story two walk-off home runs on the season, making him only the fifth Rockies’ player with as many, joining Dante Bichette (1996), Larry Walker (2001), Jason Giambi (2010) and Chris Iannetta (2010).
Picture of the Week
The St. Louis Cardinals pose on the Busch Stadium mound following a 9-0 drubbing of the Chicago Cubs to clinch the NL Central pennant. Due in large part to the Colorado Rockies exacting revenge on the Milwaukee Brewers for the 2018 NLDS sweep and returning the favor for the final three games of the 2019 season, the Cards will enjoy the next three days off while the Wild Card Brewers will need to travel to Washington, D.C. to face the Nationals in a do-or-die scenario.
