Colorado State men’s basketball received good news on Monday regarding transfer guard P.J. Byrd. The NCAA has approved Byrd’s waiver, allowing the sophomore guard to be immediately eligible this season.
The news was originally reported by Marcus Sloan, before a direct source confirmed to BSN Rams that the waiver has been approved.
Byrd, a 6-foot-1, 185 pound guard, averaged 9.2 minutes per game at VCU in 2018-19. In limited action, Byrd averaged 1.2 points and 1.1 assist per game as a true freshman.
Coming out of Bush High School in Houston, TX., Byrd received interest from Boise State. As a junior and senior, Byrd was named the District 20-6A Most Valuable Player. Byrd was also part of four consecutive district championships.
Having Byrd immediately eligible will be big for the Rams, who will be looking to rebound from back-to-back difficult seasons. Byrd joins a stable of players that can run the offense, including Kendle Moore (sophomore), Hyron Edwards (junior) and Isaiah Stevens (freshman). The backcourt also features Kris Martin (senior), who will be returning for his senior season.
