DENVER — The Colorado Rockies will have to get by without one of the most dominant relievers in baseball for at least the next week and a half. Right-hander Adam Ottavino, who’s allowed three runs in 28 1/3 innings of work this season, was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a left oblique strain, the team announced Monday. Colorado recalled Scott Oberg from Triple-A Albuquerque to fill in for him.
Ottavino had no issues getting through his appearance in Sunday’s win over the Cincinnati Reds. He came on for Mike Dunn in the eighth inning. It took him four pitches to induce an inning-ending double play. The outing marked the 25th time in 27 tries Ottavino held an opponent scoreless.
The 32-year-old righty has blown away almost everyone he’s faced this season. His 0.95 ERA ranks eight among Major League relievers and fifth in the Nation League. He’s struck out 45 batters and walked 10.
Oberg last pitched at the big league level on April 23. He gave up five runs and only got through 1/3 of an inning in an ugly 13-5 loss to the San Diego Padres. He was demoted to Triple-A shortly thereafter. Oberg performed well with the Isotopes, allowing three runs and striking out 13 batters across 14 1/3 innings.
