As the city of Baltimore saw tensions over the death of Freddie Gray boil over from Monday night into Tuesday morning, Denver Nuggets swingman Will Barton saw an opportunity to bring his city together despite the surrounding chaos.

Barton, a Baltimore native, starred at Lake Clifton High School and later went on to play his college ball at Memphis, but still has a strong voice in his community back home.

Barton posted on his Instagram account that he “respectfully request friends, neighborhood leaders, and people of influence,” to meet him at the famed Cloverdale Basketball Court to “plan and execute a positive strategy on how to protect and proactively save our children and our communities.”

In a subsequent post, Barton wrote that McDonalds is bringing 2,500 burgers, snacks, and more for anyone that shows up at 3 p.m. and hopes that he can provide dialogue about the ongoing situation to his Baltimore community.

Brought over in a midseason trade from Portland where he became known as the “The People’s Champ,” Barton averaged 11.0 ppg, in 28 games for the Nuggets this season.
