Great question-What is different about the Nuggets defense this year?
1. Jokic is applying his genius-level anticipation to the defensive end and giving a quality effort.
2. Millsap is applying the weight of his 30 million dollar salary towards being The Leader on the defensive end and has wisely deferred to have a lesser role on the offensive side. He is flying around on defense and helping Jokic alot.
3. The Nuggets jettisoned their dead weight players (Chandler, Faried, Mudiay and Arthur) who would not OR could not play defense consistently every night AND rewarded younger, more hungry players with new contracts (Jokic, Barton, Craig and Morris).
4. Juancho looks much more athletic and active at his slimmed down ideal weight for playing small forward.
5. More playing time for Lyles and Beasley.
6. And lastly, even if Plumlee only improves his free throw shooting by 10-15%, I still would want him to be the backup Center instead of Nurkic.

Coach Malone is right, Defense is built on Pride and Denver now has the Players!!!

A combination of a lot of things. They’re buying in. Also, Millsap is playing at a defensive player of the year level.
