Andrew Johnson came out with his player tracking plus minus stats. Very interesting. Stat combines regularized adjusted plus minus stats with data from SportVU player tracking. Regularized adjusted plus minus stats figure out how much better your team does with you on the floor, but unlike normal plus minus, it adjusts for teammate quality (i.e., the Rockets are only 0.4 points better per 100 possessions on defense with Dwight Howard on the floor even though Howard is really awesome at defense, and that’s because Howard is usually on the floor with other Rocket’s starters like James Harden and Terrence Jones, who are pretty terrible defensively). Additionally, it adjusts for opponent quality. Andrew Johnson combined this stat with various player tracking numbers from NBA.com, which track the movements of players, points per possession when players run various plays, etc. You can literally find out how many points per possession Gary Harris allows when defending the pick and roll ball handler, for example. I love basketball stats, but I don’t know enough to understand the math behind the statistic. All I know is that APBR had a contest last year to see who could devise a model that did the best job of predicting 2014-2015 win totals, and player tracking plus minus won, barely. So let’s see what the stat thinks about the Nuggets (also, rounding things means OFF+DEF doesn’t always equal total, see Darrell Arthur).
