Hot take: Malone will be forced to use Bol and Cancar more and that may be a blessing in disguise. They still need to find a swing defender but they still have depth and plenty of pieces are really, they have until the trade deadline to find such a player.

The Reality Check from Grant leaving Denver is that he is not a Power Forward and that he wanted his increased role without the presence of Michael Porter Jr’s emergence as a star to take shine away from his game. He gets to be The small forward in Detroit…Good for Him.
And Good for Denver…yes Grant is versatile, yes he can guard Kawhi (didn’t slow down Lebron much), but he is not the only answer and especially not the answer for 20 mil/year. I trust the well established Hollinger ratings and analysis which forecast that Grant would be overpaid and that he had the lowest 5-man combination plus/minus rating on Nuggets rotation last year.
Denver has to buy into Team Defense…Malone will continue to sound the alarms on that. Connelly will find additional, adequate (not elite), wing/post defenders for this season.
In conclusion, Denver’s continued Ascension and Jump to the NBA Finals will be evident through the improvement of Murray (All-Star), MPJ (starter), Barton (healthy), Bol (playing time) and Zeke (insurance big).
Thanks for the Emergency DNVR podcast…the Denver Skyline is still Bright.

Losing Grant hurts in a few ways. It definitely impacts their short term goal but the long term as well. He turned out to be a 1 year rental that cost the Nuggets a 1st round pick and with Hampton costing another 1st round pick I believe they’ll now have 1 first rounder over the next 3 years. When they acquired Grant the story went that he wanted a bigger role than he had in OKC. Next time a player they’re interested in says that – believe them and maybe clarify with the agent what that looks like! You’re right that he would be the 4th option on offense but he also had to share too many minutes with Milsap. At the time, everyone was happy with the step Murray took in the playoffs but it really revealed what a ball dominate player he needs to be to catch fire. I’m sure MPJ took notice too… Connelly has done a nice job assembling a group of young players with interesting skillsets but with their commitment to Murray they may have to tweak their strategy and target some guys that they know will accept specific smaller roles like a Torrey Craig. It may turn out to be like building a team around James Harden.
