Malone needs to come to terms with what the growing and emerging identity of the Nuggets is becoming. No matter how great Nikola Jokic is and will be, he will always be better offensively than defensively so when he is on the floor that is what the Nuggets IDENTITY will primarily be. This is the Nuggets identity because of Jokic’s great ability to be an efficient offensive player while similtaneously making his teammates better on the court as well. The Nuggets identity does not mean that Malone should not strive for the Nuggets to play better or more acceptable defense, it means that in order to win games at home and on the road what are the talents and executions that Denver can take advantage of to win a majority of close games and to not blow good leads in the 4th quarter. Of course, Jokic is not the total sum of the Nuggets identity; many players will contribute to the Nuggets success. What I see recently since the implementation of the new and effective starting lineup is that the “Other Jokic” Jamal Murray who is another great offensive clutch player who also greatly helps his teammates be better is not playing enough minutes to help the Nuggets win close games. Sure, in the games that the Nuggets are leading by more than 10 for most of the game against lesser teams it is no big deal. Sure, Will Barton has been solid off the bench. Sure, Nelson has been a stabilizing force at PG when Mudiay was not playing well. But, this is the KEY…Nelson’s role on the team is short term, he should play when our young guards are not playing well. The solution for the Nuggets’ current struggles is to play Jokic and Murray together in the 4th quarter to win games because they both are clutch and make everybody better offensively–that is our IDENTITY–that is our FUTURE.
