He was the 10th overall pick of the Phoenix Suns in 1985 and went on to play in the league for 14 seasons for the Suns, Sacramento Kings, Boston Celtics, Milwaukee Bucks, Toronto Raptors, Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers. He played in 793 career NBA games and averaged 6.8 points and five rebounds.

Pinckney retired in 1997 and joined Villanova’s coaching staff in 2003 as an assistant. His first NBA coaching gig came with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2007; he worked under three different head coaches in three seasons: Randy Wittman (Wizards current head coach), Kevin McHale and Kurt Rambis. Tom Thibodeau hired Pinckney in 2010 with the Chicago Bulls, and he was there until joining the Nuggets this season.

In the video below, Pinckney is being interviewed by Altitude Sports’ Vic Lombardi and the two are discussing post play in the NBA. Pinckney explains how the game changed with the addition of the restricted area (the semicircle in the paint under the rim), tells Lombardi who the best charge takers on the Nuggets are and discusses who Nikola Jokic reminds him of and how assistant coach Ryan Bowen works closely with the big men.
