What Scouts See
A small but industrious speedster that always seeks to be engaged in the play. Skates very well and has the shiftiness to avoid being rubbed out. Isn’t afraid of physical play, but knows his role as an offensive catalyst and plays to his strengths. Excellent hands and hockey sense. Only knock is his size, but that doesn’t impede his compete level. Possesses the fundamental skills and natural goal scoring instincts that make the players around him better.
Future Considerations:
Ronning, the son of former NHLer Cliff, is an offensive-minded forward just like his father. He is an explosive, wide-based skater who is able to quickly drive lanes and exploit mistakes on the ice. When he sees an opening, he uses his powerful first step to turn on the jets and jump to the attack, showing a great compete level around loose pucks. He complements this speed and shiftiness with great hands and solid intelligence. Ronning is a slippery player who can operate with the puck at high speed.
What BSN Avalanche sees
Ronning is your classic tiny-but-mighty small star. He’s quick, agile, crafty, highly skilled with the puck, and possesses all the creativity and offense that you want from a player. He competes hard and has a high hockey IQ that allows him to flourish offensively and be dominant in that end of the ice.
First off, some injuries slowed his development a few years ago and when talking about a kid like Ronning, who needs to maximize every single ounce of his talent if he’s going to make it, that delay badly hurt him. Now that he’s healthy again, Ronning will need to dedicate himself to the weight room as he’s all bark and no bite right now because he lacks any kind of strength to consistently compete. He has found ways to be effective in the rugged WHL but unless he bulks up significantly, his pro outlook may be limited.
Highlights
NHL Potential
It’s hard to say there’s much here until Ronning puts on serious muscle mass and proves he can still play a similar game to the one he does now with the added weight. With such a small frame, you wonder how close he already is to maxed out and if he can’t add the strength, is it even worth using a draft pick to follow him through his junior career?
Expected Draft Position
Ronning is listed in the 100’s of most rankings. He is strictly a mid-round at best candidate right now.
How Prospect Fits in Avalanche Organization
Not very well, that’s for sure. He’s small and one-dimensional. That’s not exactly the combination the Avalanche have been targeting since Joe Sakic and Patrick Roy took over and transformed the Avs from small stars to one of the biggest organizations in the league. Ronning’s skill would be welcome as a mid-round selection as the team has a serious lack of skilled forward prospects but would he physically hold up to pro hockey?
