What Scouts See
Hockey Prospect Black Book:
Ang possesses high end speed and is a very offensive minded forward. He uses his speed very well when attempting to create offensive opportunities. He will challenge defenders one on one consistently and regardless of the result, he will keep coming back at defenders using his speed to try and get in for scoring chances. He has good puck skills and good offensive creativity. While Ang effortlessly gains the offensive zone off the rush and often gains a stride on his opposition, he still shows hesitation to drive the net, avoiding high traffic areas.
What BSN Avalanche sees
Ang is quick on his skates with good acceleration that gets him to his top speed quickly with a powerful stride. He knows he’s fast and uses his speed to overwhelm some of the OHL’s weaker defensemen. He’s at his best off the rush and in transition as he struggles in more of a cycle game that requires him to spend a lot of time along the wall.
There’s not a lot of creativity here and his reliance on his linemates was definitely a little disappointing to see. Given his hands and shooting ability, I expected a bit more from him offensively but instead I was consistently left wanting.
Highlights
NHL Potential
Ang is a guy I would give the “tools without a toolbox” label to. He has plenty of raw skills but doesn’t have the makeup to maximize them. He doesn’t play a big game even for the OHL and that certainly isn’t going to change as he progresses into the tougher pro leagues of North America. I honestly think Ang best profiles as a future top six forward somewhere in Europe.
Expected Draft Position
Ang is strictly a mid-round prospect.
How Prospect Fits in Avalanche Organization
Ang doesn’t have great size but his skating ability will appeal to the Avalanche so it wouldn’t be a shock to see them take a chance on Ang later in the draft. He’s a talented guy with questionable hockey IQ who plays a small game. That alone isn’t a great fit for the Avs organization but as a forward with skill he wouldn’t be incredibly out of place, either.
