What Scouts See

Elite Prospects:

A big, strong all-around player who thinks the game at a high level and executes plays with purpose and drive. Accelerates well and has no issues getting around the ice with haste; transition game will need some tweaks. Very good vision and puck skills, and has the size to make a difference driving to the net and causing havoc for the opposition’s defence. Defensively sound, using his size to his advantage along the boards and getting his stick in place to deflect passes out of harm’s way. Moving forward, Morrison will have every opportunity to develop into a smart power forward who can play in all situations and make it difficult on the opposition.

Future Considerations:

Morrison is an offensive-minded center who possesses solid size and skill. He likes to go to the area around the net front and often gets to the top of the crease anticipating pucks headed his direction. He shows that he has quick hands in tight, finding pucks quickly and getting them on the net.  Morrison has a good motor and drive to his game, using his powerful skating stride to try to keep up with the play. He gets the play moving in the right direction and has the skilled hands to carry the puck through the offensive zone and find a good passing lane.

What BSN Avalanche sees

I’ll start off by saying I like Morrison’s game. Guys who are multi-faceted, play all situations, and work hard are the easiest to appreciate. He’s got good hands, solid playmaking instincts, and he’s a good skater. He likes the rough stuff and though he doesn’t actively seek it out, he certainly isn’t why when it comes his way.

As a typical power forward prospect, you wonder how his overall game develops. It’s hard to be a consistent difference maker playing that style and contributing real offense. It’s not hard to see Morrison becoming a decent depth guy someday. The real question is if he breaks through and becomes a legitimate top six talent.

Highlights (Speaker check)

NHL Potential

As mentioned above, it’s not hard to see Morrison as a good depth guy on a team. He has a wide body that he’s comfortable using and plenty of all-around game to boot but can he really press forward and be more? I’m not completely convinced.

Expected Draft Position

Morrison is solidly a second-third round prospect. Him being drafted anywhere else would be a surprise.

How Prospect Fits in Avalanche Organization

Morrison in the third round would be really good value for the Avalanche and I would personally be all for it. In the second round, I’d be a little miffed because there will be more dynamic prospects on the board at 40. Regardless, if Morrison joins the Avalanche organization they’re getting another very intriguing prospect who could develop into a real player for them. It would not be hard at all to envision a future third line of J.C. Beaudin and Cameron Morrison wreaking havoc on opposing teams.
