Throughout the offseason, we’ll be profiling players who may end up in Denver when all is said and done with NFL free agency. The Broncos clearly have plenty of holes to fill before they get back to Super-Bowl form and we’ll be examining a long list of players they may choose to help the franchise do just that.
When examining the Denver Broncos and what exactly it is they need to improve, the offensive line is always the obvious answer. The line is not in complete shambles—center Matt Paradis is constantly ranked the best at his position—but major adjustments are necessary. Could a former a former second-overall pick be the beginning of a new era on the Denver line?
Jaguars’ offensive lineman Luke Joeckel will likely be trying his hand in the free agency market in 2017 and Denver could be the perfect landing spot for a former first rounder to finally see success in the National Football League.
Strengths
Joeckel’s ability to shift between positions on the offensive line should be a high point on the list when it comes to evaluating the lineman. No. 76 played left tackle throughout college and his first three years in the NFL and was asked to transition to guard in 2016; Joeckel complied and succeeded gracefully before the injury. That type of play would alleviate pressure from players such as Michael Schofield and Donald Stephenson, who struggled throughout the course of the 2016 season.
The constant changing of players over the last two seasons could be addressed with a multi-purpose player such as Joeckel on the roster.
Weaknesses
Joeckel has a history of injuries in the National Football League over his four-year career. Joeckel missed 12 games in 2016 after suffering a major MCL injury and possible ACL tear, causing him to be placed on injured reserve. That tear is not the only major injury for the young Aggie alum; Joeckel missed 11 games his rookie year of 2013 and two in 2015 with knee problems.
How he fits in Denver
Joeckel is an absolute physical specimen, standing at 6-foot-6, 306 pounds. The former Texas A&M standout could make an immediate impact for a Broncos’ squad that ranked 27th in rushing last season. With the possible loss of Russell Okung upcoming, Joeckel would be a solid replacement as a veteran lineman.
