The NBA is investigating an incident between a fan and referee James Capers that took place following the conclusion of the Nuggets’ 95-90 loss the Wizards on Sunday at Pepsi Center.
As the officials were exiting the floor and heading towards the referee’s dressing room, a fan yelled obscenities at Capers. Pepsi Center security quickly apprehended the fan and removed him from the arena.
According to a team official, it was determined after interviews with nearby fans and both NBA and arena security that was in the area that what the fan said was not racial. Capers provided a statement to the league following the game that corroborate those findings, and the league will continue to look into the incident.
Around 20 minutes earlier, Capers ejected Jokic for arguing a foul call with 3:47 remaining in the fourth quarter.
“I was fouled on the play. They’re going to see it in the two-minute (report) or whatever and say it was a foul,” Jokic said postgame. “And I said ‘James he slapped me two hands on my head.’ I don’t know, did I swear or something. He gave me a technical. And I said something back. He said ‘Do you want another one?’ I said ‘I don’t care.’ And he gave me another one.”
