Myers cycles, Colorado Rockies fall to San Deigo Padres

DENVER – The first two series of the season for the Colorado Rockies have told of a team fathering in a new era, their first in a set of three set against the San Deigo Padres did not, losing 5-3.

Wil Meyers hit for the cycle in the contest, coming into the ball game he slashed .323/.378/.600 over his 16 games at Coors Field. On Monday he went four-for-four with one of each, finishing on the hardest to come by, the triple in the eighth. The Padres first baseman also drove in two San Deigo runs which proved to be enough.

The Rockies grounded into the twin killer in three of the first four innings, putting the five hits they got off of Padres starer Jarred Cosart to waste.

The Padres got to Tyler Chatwood early, but no damage was done until a leadoff walk was driven in by Will Myers on a two-bagger.

Meyers followed up in the sixth with a solo shot that landed in the bullpen, which got active upon the ball’s landing and made the score 2-0. Another walk came to haunt Chatwood as Hunter Renfroe made quick work of Chatty in the sixth knocking him out of the game with a two-run shot to the porch in right. The visitors then led by four.

Chatwood struggled with his command and seemed to fight himself a bit tonight, spraying the ball early. The bad news for the Padres is that he was so all over the place that he actually struck-out seven hitters. The Rockies’ most veteran starter made it through five-and-a-third, allowing four earned, not awful for Coors but the bats did him no favors.

DJ LeMahieu hit a solo shot in the sixth which equaled a cycle over his past five at-bats in two games combined. Although that stat and furthermore that run was meaningless, 2016’s batting champ is once again hitting. DJLM also doubled and walked in the contest.

In the eighth Meyers finished what he started in the first, gaping a stand-up triple into left field. He was driven in on a sacrifice fly which made it 5-2 papas.

The Rockies scored two in the ninth in a Mark Reynolds 417 foot blast with two outs. It proved meaningless as Brandon Maurer nabbed three outs before LoDo could be lit with some magic.

The final was 5-3, with the Rockies failing to string much together in the contest.
