In somewhat of a surprise, Mike Bobo was upset with his team on Tuesday.
All throughout Bobo’s first fall camp, the head coach has been pleased with the team’s progress, with their energy as they’ve bought into his new style of offense and leadership. On Tuesday, following Colorado State’s fifth practice of the fall, Bobo’s throat was hoarse, his voice partially lost from seemingly yelling all day in practice.
“It disappointed today, first day in pads,” Bobo said of the team’s energy. “Four good days and we come out here today, feeling sorry about ourself. The bar is higher than that and they were way lower than we need them to be. It’s not going to get it done. So, we’ve got to come back out tomorrow and be better.”
“We went ‘live’ for the last two periods, but it wasn’t really live,” Bobo continued. “Wasn’t much tackling, wasn’t much hitting. A lot of guys feeling sorry for themselves and going half speed and that’s going to get guys hurt.”
On Monday, spirits were high for Media Day and they continued into practice. The intensity was there – in the form of extra curriculars, which Bobo wasn’t upset with because they were broken up quickly – but it all evaporated quickly.
“I’m expecting to come out here everyday like yesterday,” the head coach said of what he wants to see in the team moving forward into two-a-days. “To practice like a champion. There is no difference. Every day we step on the field, every day we come into that building, we’ve got to practice like a champion.”
But it’s not all on the players, either.
“We all don’t feel good every day of the week,” he continued. “And the energy level’s got to be there where we can raise our level of play. From coaches, too. The coaches didn’t get it done today, myself included. We didn’t come out here with the right mindset and players are a reflection of the coach.”
Want to be a champion? Act like a champion. And that means bringing your all to the field – whether it’s for a practice or during a game – every, single time.
Bobo is setting his expectations high now and showing his team he’s in charge. All those years at Georgia and in the SEC have taught Bobo what it level of intensity is needed on a daily basis to be great. Today, CSU disappointed their leader.
