- The Colorado Rockies have placed infielder Ryan McMahon on the Injured List and promoted infielder Josh Fuentes, the team announced on Saturday.
McMahon had a scary moment late in the home opener when a wide throw from Nolan Arenado that took him into the oncoming path of baserunner A.J. Pollock.
Playing first base because of the injury to Daniel Murphy, ironically, McMahon stayed in the game after the nasty collision and was later diagnosed with a sprained elbow, a tough break for the young man getting his first taste of regular starts at MLB early in 2019.
And now Arenado’s own cousin will be the one replacing the injured 24-year-old.
Fuentes missed all of spring training with a broken hamate bone in his left hand but impressed throughout all of last season en route to being named the Pacific Coast League Rookie of the Year and MVP thanks to batting .327 with 14 home runs and 95 runs batted in.
Originally undrafted, Fuentes got a look from Colorado thanks to his family connections, before grinding through the lower levels of the minors.
Predominantly a third baseman, Fuentes played 27 games at first base between Triple-A Albuquerque and his time representing the Rockies in the Arizona Fall League.
