FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Marvin Kinsey will be playing professionally after all. The former Colorado State running back confirmed to DNVR Rams on Thursday that he has signed a deal with the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League (CFL).
The news, which was originally reported by Justin Dunk of 3DownNation.com, is not much of a surprise after Kinsey did not hear his name called in the 2020 NFL Draft or get signed as a free agent afterwards.
The one-time Rams starter has always possessed the skill to play at the next level but troubles with ball security and issues off of the field have held him back over the years.
In seven games in 2019, Kinsey led CSU with eight rushing touchdowns. Unfortunately, he also led the team with seven fumbles before being dismissed.
In terms of his potential pro success, the fumbling issues are definitely concerning. It doesn’t matter that Kinsey averaged 5.1 yards per carry in his college career if the coaches can’t trust him to hang onto the football — especially at the next level, where you’re essentially always a play or two away from being out of a job.
Having said that, though, with Kinsey’s ability to bust a big run — if he’s able to make a name for himself up north — there’s always a possibility that we could see him playing ball in the states again someday.
As he has shown throughout his career, Kinsey is the type of running back that can completely change a game with one carry. If he can stay on the right path off of the gridiron, and avoid the type of situations that got him suspended from the Rams on multiple occasions, look for Kinsey to put together a nice professional career either in Canada or elsewhere.
