Laying the Wood: Nolan Arenado is on a torrid pace

In the first inning of the final game of a series against the Washington Nationals, Nolan Arenado waited back on a low slider and laced it to left field. The low line drive cleared the fence and crashed into the seats with authority. It was his 23rd home run of the season and sixth home run in his last nine games.

Over his last 33 games, Arenado is hitting .370/.397/.688 with nine home runs, 11 doubles, and 43 RBI. He currently leads MLB in RBI at 89, nine more than second place Jake Lamb of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Arenado has 14 more RBI than any player in the American League.

We will have more soon on his continued production in the clutch and something he is on pace to do that has only been done three times in the history of the National League.

If the Rockies can keep their heads above water and/or if the acquisition of Pat Neshek (and others?) can propel them to a strong finish, they should find themselves in a Wild Card game. If their third baseman keeps up this kind of production and that sequence of events unfolds, he should be right in the mix for MVP considerations if not at the very top of the list.
