LaTroy Hawkins out as Rockies closer

After a rough weekend Walt Weiss has decided to make a change in his bullpen.

Hawkins blew a save on Sunday giving up a home-run to former Rockie Dexter Fowler in the top of the ninth inning in the Rockies loss to the Cubs.

This isn’t to say Hawkins wont return to this role at some point, but it’s probably better longterm. Hawkins can still be an effective pitcher but his talents may be better utilized in a different role.

Many will clamor for Adam Ottavino and his devastating slider to get a shot at the closer gig but Weiss is turning to experience for now. Betancourt has 57 career saves for the Rockies and was the primary closer from 2012-2013.

It’s good to see even just six games in, Weiss being pro-active, instead of re-active.
